Our Mercadito Stays Open When It Matters Most

As colder weather settled over Downeast Maine this fall, many families faced an additional layer of uncertainty during the federal government shutdown. But throughout those challenging weeks, Mano en Mano’s culturally nourishing food pantry — Our Mercadito — remained a steady source of support and connection.

While programs across the region experienced disruptions, Our Mercadito kept its doors open, ensuring that no family went without access to the foods they rely on.

Thanks to the dedication of community members, staff, and volunteers the pantry provided food to more than 2,200 community members, distributing an estimated 38,889 pounds of food — the equivalent of 46,667 meals.

For many, Our Mercadito is more than a pantry. It’s a welcoming space where folks can find familiar ingredients, neighbors have space to connect, and where dignity and celebrating identity guide decision making. During the shutdown, these values mattered more than ever.

As we move into a new season, Mano en Mano remains committed to keeping Our Mercadito strong.

Your contribution makes a real difference for families and kids who rely on Our Mercadito. Please consider giving today.
