Mano en Mano celebrates La Posada

Director of Access and Advocacy programming, Laura Thomas, serving pozole at this years celebration!

Every December, Mano en Mano staff, community members and volunteers come together to create a space to connect, celebrate, share food, listen and dance to music, and pass on cultural traditions to the next generation.

La Posada is a tradition celebrated throughout Latin America that connects to the New Testament story of Mary and Joseph's walk through Bethlehem in search of a vacant room. A “posada” means "hospitality," or a space to stay. The tradition is to invite family, friends, and neighbors into someone’s home to share a meal and a hot drink, away from the cold.  It also represents communities coming together to support one another, and the importance of generosity and togetherness.

This past year was the 16th annual celebration of La Posada, and while it looked a bit different than years prior, the spirit of togetherness and celebration was the same.

Mano en Mano staff and community members collaborated to create a “drive-thru” style Posada. Families and community members were able to stop by our Milbridge office to pick-up tamales and pozole, listen to music, and spend time together (while staying socially distanced).

Community members shared:

Me gusto la organización para el evento y la comida. También como cuidaron a las personas por el COVID.

I liked the organization of the event and the food. I also liked how they took care of everyone because of COVID.

Gracias por hacer los eventos y adaptarse a las necesidades de la comunidad . Los tamales estaban deliciosos
