On Saturday May 13th, more than 180 people from across Washington county and beyond came to Milbridge Elementary School to celebrate the 11th annual Día de las Madres (Mother’s Day) event. Leaders from Nuestra Voz en la Comunidad (Our Voice in the Community) planned the evening to celebrate local mothers.
After doors opened at 5:00, families were invited to sit for family portraits by Fire Chicks Photography. The community potluck began at 6:00, and after eating and announcements by MCs Silvia and Darrell Paine, different groups took to the stage with a variety of dances. The presentations included a mix of ages and styles, including the annual favorite “Danza de los Viejitos,” where young men donned masks, manteles, and bastones (canes) for a comical and lively portrayal of older men (los viejitos). After each group performed, prizes ranging from gift cards and goods donated from local stores to a free manicure were raffled off for mothers who came to the event. The last presentation was a slideshow featuring pictures and videos of children from the community giving thanks to their own mothers. The rest of the night was filled with dancing and celebration in community.
The event would not have been possible without the dedicated planning of Nuestra Voz members, the volunteers who helped on the day of the event, the participants in the performances, the local businesses that donated to the raffle, DJ EJ, and Fire Chicks Photography. Many thinks also to all those who came and celebrated with us this year!
