On November 30th, 12 migrant students and families who are a part of the Maine Migrant Education Program (MEP) attended a painting class at the Mano en Mano office with local artist and teacher Jane Snider.
Jane read the students the book “The Dot” about creativity, self-esteem, and problem solving in art before encouraging students to paint a holiday-themed picture. Using acrylic paints and painting on canvases propped up by miniature easels, the students followed Jane’s model painting and were encouraged to paint creatively in whatever colors they wanted using their new knowledge of the color wheel. Jane walked around from student to student, giving them tips on color blending, painting techniques, and ideas for different shapes and patterns. Parents also attended the painting event, helping their children paint or even working on their own works of art.
