On Saturday December 3rd, Mano en Mano and members of Nuestra Voz en la Comunidad (Our Voice in the Community) hosted our 6th Annual Christmas event, La Posada. For the first time, the event was part of Milbridge's Christmas on Main Street celebration, when area businesses and organizations put on events and activities throughout the day. Community members were able to spend their day in town and attend La Posada in the evening at Milbridge Elementary School. This format led to more people participating in La Posada, including Mr. and Mrs. Claus who stopped by for photos and supper.
The night began with the traditional song of “Pedir Posada” and a delicious assortment of foods that the community brought for the potluck, including homemade champurrado hot chocolate. Over dinner, community members put on a short play entitled “Navidad para los pobres” (Christmas for the Less Fortunate), which taught the value of family and spirit over material gifts during the winter holiday season. Kids were able to enjoy the activities table where they made holiday crafts and later were able to chase candy after breaking open locally made piñatas. La Posada ended with some dancing and beautiful homemade aguinaldo goody bags for the kids made by Nuestra Voz.
The celebration was a great opportunity for cultural exchange and to build bridges within the greater community. We hope to see you next year!
