Have you met Juana Vazquez, one of the Americorps members at Mano en Mano? You may see her from time to time at our office, meeting with parents of the Comienza en Casa program, or running activities at the Milbridge library. Juana started working at Mano en Mano as a part-time Americorps volunteer last Fall, helping in the English classes as an extra tutor and with hands-on activities.
Now she is helping staff member Ana Blagojevic with the Comienza en Casa project, holding early-literacy library events with kids and working with parents to show them how they can help their kids use the library’s resources. She and Kate Brinks, our full-time Americorps member, are currently planning a session for parents on utilizing the computers available in the library.
Juana was born in Apaseo el Alto, Mexico, and moved to Milbridge in 1998, in the fourth grade. She graduated from Narraguagus high school and went to cosmetology school in Bangor. She has also worked with her family at their food truck at Wyman’s camp in the summers since 2002 and since they opened their food truck in Milbridge in 2010.
Juana first became interested in being an Americorps volunteer when Ana talked to her about working with Mano en Mano as an Americorps in a volunteer capacity to earn money toward going to college. Juana is very interested in the early learning programs for young children that Mano en Mano is working on, and is interested in learning more about early childhood education and being more engaged with our programs. She says one challenge about her work is finding the right time at the library when families will attend events and being available when families are available.
Fun Fact: Juana likes to dance! To all kinds of music.
We’re so glad she’s a part of our team at Mano en Mano this year.
