Once again Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home — a program of Mano en Mano and the Maine Migrant Education Program — is gearing up for an invigorating Fall! The first Friday of September, families and students met at the Milbridge Elementary School to learn about the first unit of the fall season — Color Explorers! While sticking with traditional early learning themes parents discussed and were provided with information about the importance of using rich vocabulary in the home and how books are an excellent tool to build both vocabulary and concept knowledge.
Parents took iPads home with them that were loaded with Apps which support the early learning concepts, watercolors, markers and different types of paper to use for offscreen experiments and creations. Over the summer, Mano en Mano strengthened ties with the Milbridge Public Library and, using a mini-grant from the University of Maine, purchased two iPads which are now available for use at the library. Later this Fall we look forward to expand programming and make resources about intentional technology use and early learning available through the library as well!
Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home was created by Mano en Mano to serve the unique needs of migrant farmworker students and parents who are enrolled in the Maine Migrant Education Program. The program works together with families of preschool and kindergarten children who primarily speak little or no English in the home to promote school readiness, literacy in the home, and early education topics.
