On June 15th, families involved with Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home – a program of Mano en Mano and the Maine Migrant Education Program – took a deeper look at the Milbridge Library. The Saturday morning trip involved a tour by librarian Melissa Smith-Rapa, a sharing time where students shared e-books and videos they had made during the CeC spring session, exploration of the toy corner and a review of online resources for the parents who were attending.
It was a beautiful summer day, and following the indoor activities students and parents headed over to the lawn in front of the Women’s Health Resource Library for some fun with bubbles. The visit ended with a short jaunt down the path towards the bridge. Parents who participated were very happy to know about the the park and trail as a fun spot for a family outing. Since CeC programming ceases during the summer, families who participated were given a summer fun bag which included a list of directions to local kid friendly hikes and swimming spots. We look forward to collaborating more with the library this Fall!
Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home was created by Mano en Mano to serve the unique needs of migrant farmworker students and parents who are enrolled in the Maine Migrant Education Program. The program works together with families of preschool and kindergarten children who primarily speak little or no English in the home to promote school readiness and early education topics.
