Mano en Mano recently received a $7,500 grant from the People of Color Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to support an AmeriCorps member position in our ESL Program, beginning this Fall.
An AmeriCorps member will be assigned to help provide educational assistance to ESL students in MSAD #37 who are primarily Latino. This newly funded position will allow more one-on-one attention and tutoring instruction for grades K-12 students in the program. In conjunction with our pilot initiatives this coming Fall for revamped programs with adult English language learners, the AmeriCorps position will give additional support for children and youth, focusing on mentoring, service learning and community engagement, high school and college preparation, and academic help. Our existing programming will also be strengthened by promotion of literacy and English language acquisition by the AmeriCorps member, and continued collaboration with other partner agencies.
We anticipate seeing increased academic performance, student aspirations, community engagement, and academic performance as a result of this newly funded position. We are very excited to move forward with planning and developing further programs that assist our clients! We would not be able to take such steps without the support of organizations like the Maine Community Foundation.
