Community Collaborations Lead to Successful Children’s Day Event

On April 25th, the Milbridge Public Library’s Navigator Group hosted El Día del Niño | Children’s Day (a popular traditional celebration in Mexico) for the whole community. With a number of games, activities like face painting, an iPad table, and an art table, piñatas, and raffles, the event drew a large crowd of families and many children. There was no charge for entry or food, and all of the baked goods and snacks were a result of donated items and the collaboration of community members. Children were engaged all afternoon and even got to have a kids’ dance party for the last part of the event.

Many community members remarked, “this is the most diverse event I’ve ever attended in Milbridge.” Also impressive were the 27 volunteers that helped pull off the event, from manning to tables, to setup and cleanup, to the DJ that kept the activities moving and the energy up.

The Navigator Group at the Milbridge Public Library is one of the results of a grant that Mano en Mano received through the Lerner Foundation, which focuses on building a stronger relationship with the library, and offering capacity building and support around inclusive programming for adults and children that is community-wide. The Navigators are made up of various community members that plan different types of programming at the library, and with support from Mano en Mano as the group develops. We are looking forward to the next community events from the Milbridge library. They add so much to our community.
