Gracias, Mama: Mother’s Day Event
Our 8th annual Mother’s Day Celebration was a wonderful opportunity for community members to come together and to celebrate mothers. On Saturday, May 10th, families gathered at the Milbridge Elementary school gymnasium to do just that. The gym, adorned with streamers, balloons, papel picado, paper flowers, and lit-up budding trees, was the backdrop as families enjoyed many dishes brought for the potluck dinner. Meanwhile, Mano en Mano’s own Ana Blagojevic was busy photographing family portraits. After eating a delicious cake made by local baker Lissa Robinson, attendees took to their seats to watch the program.
In Mexico, El Día de la Madre (Mother’s Day) is widely celebrated. Schools host presentations where students present an extensive program for mothers, performing skits, poems, and dancing. Mano en Mano | Hand in Hand puts on this Mother’s Day Event to honor and celebrate mothers in out community. The evening’s program consisted of 4 short plays, a march by fathers and their children, a dance to a Mexican polka, a read poem, and two songs sung in Spanish.
Following the program, the lights dimmed, and a video of children and adults alike wishing their mother a happy mothers day and sending messages of love and gratitude was screened. There was many a tearful eye as so many mothers in the room were appreciated! Following the program, home goods, beauty products, and a homemade cake were raffled off to moms. Later, the crowd spun and danced to top hits as well as salsa, bachata, cumbia, and merengue.
We were so excited to see so many new and familiar faces at the event! We hope that next year even more community members will both attend and take part in the preparations for the event!
Special thanks to the many volunteers that performed, set up, cleaned up, donated raffle items, DJ’d, and contributed to this year’s event. We couldn’t have done it all without you!
