Mano Staff Attend The Impact of Poverty on Education Conference at UMO
Mano en Mano staff members Kate Brinks, Bethany Woods and Ana Blagojevic attended The Impact of Poverty on Education: How Educators Can Be the Difference conference at the University of Maine in Orono on October 18th, 2013. Dr. Donna Beegle was the keynote speaker and Suzen Polk-Hoffses of Milbridge Elementary was a speaker on the panel discussion.
Dr. Beegle was an extremely dynamic speaker and spoke extensively on the issues of generational and situational poverty in our nation. Speaking to education majors from the University of Maine and professionals from the area, she stressed the importance of understanding and respect, and the need to really take into account the experiences of students in poverty to understand how to make them successful.
Bonnie Blagojevic (Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home consultant), Mary Ellen Logue and Karen Thomes of the educational collaborative MEET*EC also attended and met with MeM staff after the conference. You can learn more about the work of Donna Beegle here:
