Meet Mano en Mano’s New Americorps Member

We’d like to introduce you to Kate Brinks, our new Americorps member! We’re so glad that she is joining us for the coming year at Mano en Mano and we asked Kate a few questions to get to know her a little better. Welcome Kate!

Where are you from and what did you do before moving to Maine?

I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan where, this past year, I was serving a year with an AmeriCorps HealthCorps team. I interpreted medical appointments and assisted clients in applying for government assistance.

How did you decide to move here?

After being in Grand Rapids for a while, I had decided to move on. I jumped online and found positions all over the country, but after coming out to visit Mano en Mano in July, I knew that I wanted to come on board here.

What do you think will be a challenge this year?

Small town living and having too much time on my hands. I have always lived in good sized cities (Greater Grand Rapids has a population of over one million), so living somewhere smaller makes me nervous, but it will be interesting. Also, I have always had part time (fun) jobs for my free time, whereas here I do not. Once I am settled, I decided to start quilting, so I’ll see where that takes me.

What are you most excited to learn or try out in Maine?

Is everything a proper answer? My mother would want me to answer snowshoeing, but I don’t think I have a straight answer. Although, I would love to go to a lobster bake.

Do you already have plans for what comes next after AmeriCorps?

I had decided that I had wanted to go to graduate school for non-profit management, but that seems to be fading fast. I’m keeping my eyes open for possibilities and won’t be shutting any doors anytime soon (even with grad school).

What’s a Fun Fact you’d like to share?

As a child, I ran into many objects while riding a bike: parked cars, mail boxes, electrical posts, etc. Also, although I am from Michigan, I have only been to two of the five Great Lakes (Michigan and Erie). I guess I have some catching up to do until I become a legitimate Michigander.
