iPad Project Inspires Community Collaborations

This Fall, the Migrant Education Program’s Comienza en Casa | It Starts at Home project has continued to develop its capacity to provide parents with activities and information both on and off the iPad to promote school readiness skills in the home. New to the program this Fall has been the integration of various community collaborators and guests.

The monthly parent meetings have been graced with the presence of Milbridge Elementary’s kindergarten teacher, Suzen Polk-Hoffses, who has modeled early education skills related to the off screen activities in each unit. She also answered various questions and concerns parents have had related to their child transitioning to school.

Laila Dantas, also known as Dr. Dantas, the dentist at Harrington Family Health Center, made an appearance at the October meeting and spoke briefly with parents about healthy dental care for preschool age children. Dr. Dantas then did several activities related to oral health with the children during the parent meeting. Other guests include a Zumba instructor and, for our final unit, Beth Russet, a local nurse practitioner and Yoga Instructor.

In addition to strengthening ties with the local community, the program now has it’s own webpage, with information about the program and its design that includes: tips on app selection and purchasing, and examples of student work and parent feedback. Be sure to check it out!
