Congratulations to Scholarship Recipient Maria Paniagua!
We are so pleased to announce Maria Paniagua of Milbridge as the recipient of our 2012 Latino Scholarship! This Scholarship grants $1,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year, and is renewable for the three more years that Maria will be an undergraduate.
Maria just graduated on June 8th from Narraguagus High School, and will begin her freshman year at the University of Southern Maine in the fall. She plans to be a teacher because she feels very committed to education and wants to help other children in the ways she feels she has been helped. Maria also explained that she feels excited to go to college in Portland because it’s a new place and she can learn a lot from the city and meeting new people.
Maria is a dedicated community member and volunteer, having helped with many Mano en Mano events over the years, such as our Mother’s Day Events and our Spring Fling Fundraisers. She has also always been a resource to her community, helping translate documents and interpret for parents or friends when needed. In addition, she works hard to help support her family. She has made many academic achievements and was inducted into the National Honor Society earlier this year.
We are so proud of Maria and know that she will go on to accomplish great things, and we wish her lots of success!
Mano en Mano’s Latino Scholarship Fund, an affiliate of the Northeastern Dollars for Scholars Program of Scholarship America, is established to provide renewable financial aid to both traditional and non-traditional students from Washington and Hancock Counties who self-identify as Latino and who wish to pursue post-secondary education opportunities. The Fund also currently supports University of Maine at Orono nursing students Olivia Pérez Zamora and Leticia Pérez Zamora, and Husson University student Abby Hernandez.
